First Drive: 2012 Jeep Wrangler

RUBICON vs RUBICON: On the Rocks, with a Twist
From the December, 2011 issue of Truck Trend
By Allyson Harwood

When Jeep invited us to drive the 2012 Wrangler on the Rubicon Trail, we were filled with a mix of excitement and apprehension. On the one hand, we had the keys to possibly the most capable stock vehicle on the market: the Wrangler Rubicon. On the other hand, we were taking it on one of?

When we first heard that Chryslerâ??s new Pentastar V-6 engine was going into the 2012 Jeep Wrangler, we wanted to know two things: power and fuel figures. We now have official numbers for the latter.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the two-door 2012 Wrangler is rated at 17 mpg city and 21 mpg highway with both the five-speed automatic and the six-speed manual transmissions. The four-door Unlimited model with the manual gets one mile per gallon less in city driving (16/21 mpg), while the auto is rated at 16/20 mpg (city/highway). Our last report on the Pentastar two months ago penned the figures at 16/23 mpg, which wasnâ??t too far off. The current 2011 Jeep Wrangler stuffed with the outgoing, V-6 is rated at 15/19 mpg.

The EPAâ??s site also confirms that the ancient four-speed automatic will give way to a five-speed gearbox, which should pair nicely with the Pentastar engine. Official power figures arenâ??t out yet, but the gains are expected to be even more dramatic than the improved fuel figures. We expect it to match or be close to the Grand Cherokeeâ??s output, rated at 290 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. The current, minivan-sourced 3.8-liter engine puts out just 202 hp and 237 lb-ft.

2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee Srt600 By Vilner

Ah yes, red...the color of love. Or if you just happen to fancy Bulgarian tuning at its finest, the color of Vilner's latest project for the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT600.  We've been fans of Vilner for quite some time now so a lot of the things they do really don't surprise us anymore. But this one really took us for a loop, simply because they managed to turn a Hennessey-prepped Grand…

Yelp Review from Jim L.

I live in San Diego and had been looking at the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee for a month or two prior to deciding to pull the trigger and buy the thing.  I called several local San Diego Jeep dealers but they were not willing to negotiate a deal over the phone or did not have the vehicle I wanted on their lot.  I found Huntington Beach Chrysler Jeep by searching http://autotrader.com and thought O.C. was close enough for me to give them a call. I connected with the Internet Sales Director Samir Roufaeil and was pleasantly surprised when I found that he was willing to negotiate a competitive deal over the phone.  Being the skeptical person that I am, I called to verify the particulars of the deal with Samir several times prior to making the journey from San Diego.  On my way up to O.C, I requested the car be cleaned and paperwork prep'd prior to my arrival.  When I got to the dealer I met Samir in person and the car and paperwork were ready as promised.  No back and forth with various sales managers, blah, blah...just cannot deal with that when I have my two young kids with me.  Best car buying experience for me to date and I will call them again if I decide to buy another Jeep!  Sorry the San Diego dealers missed out on my sale but I hope they read this post and take notes.

Chrysler Overdelivers Promised Power in SRT8 Muscle Cars

By Chris Woodyard, USA TODAY

Chrysler Group's SRT, now a separate brand run by design chief Ralph Gilles, promised top-shelf power when it showed its new ultra-high-performance models for 2012 on this past auto show season: the Chrysler 300 SRT8, Dodge Charger SRT8 and Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 that join the Dodge Challenger SRT8 392. Turned out when SRT rolled out the new models for media at Willow Springs in the California desert the…
Not exactly, but if you have about $5,500 and some time, you can turn your four-door, Jeep® Wrangler Unlimited into a pickup truck with the new JK-8 Kit.

Taking design cues from the popular Jeep Scrambler CJ-8, the JK-8 Independence kit gives Jeep owners more customization -- and functionality -- options. According to Mopar President/CEO Pietro Gorlier, new Wrangler Unlimited owners "typically spend more than $500 on Mopar accessories. Our new Mopar JK-8 kit answers the call for even more radical customization."

Major parts of the kit include:

  • 44-inch by 50-inch steel bed
  • inner and outer bedsides constructed from stamped sheet metal
  • sport bar extensions, Freedom Panel assemblies
  • a removable fiberglass hardtop with a sliding rear window
  • two fixed side windows
  • fiberglass bulkhead

Our MSRP for the Mopar JK-8 kit is $5,499. The kit, which comes with a three-year/36,000-mile warranty*, is available for ordering through Mopar at Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge and Ram dealerships. For ease of purchase, the kit is available as a single part number (77070049) with all hardware and body panels included. (*The warranty covers kit materials and workmanship performed at a Chrysler Group dealership.)

Conversion Process

Two processes are involved in the conversion from a four-door Jeep Wrangler Unlimited to a two-door pickup truck: disassembly and reassembly.

Disassembly

  1. First, remove each rear door.
  2. Next, for the rear-bumper assembly, the hard top and Freedom Panels are removed, followed by the rear portion of the interior, which includes seats and carpeting.
  3. Exterior trim parts are removed and preserved; inner and outer body panels are removed by drilling out the spot welds, which allows the panels to fall away and avoids having to cut into the sheet metal.
  4. The rear sport bar is cut away and removed along with B-pillars.

Reassembly

  1. The reassembly into a two-door pickup truck begins with installation of the B-pillars, cross member, floor-pan assembly (truck bed), and the inner and outer quarter panels (welding is involved in assembly).
  2. Next install the bulkhead reinforcement assembly and sport bar extensions, followed by the installation of the fiberglass bulkhead itself.
  3. The kit, with components delivered e-coated, is then prepped for paint.
  4. Install the windows to the hard top, which is then installed on the vehicle.
  5. Exterior trim parts are then reinstalled.

IF YOU go into a Jeep showroom nowadays and take a casual look at the vehicles on display, you can be forgiven for thinking that the vehicles cater primarily to a certain lifestyle. One where you can imagine you're climbing a mountain trail, while actually going up the ramp…
